How important is it for our students to learn working together and to be competent in social skills?
This has been the focus of a "flipped learning" English and Science experience.
A. Frank Primary fifth graders (sections A and B) have worked on the human body this year, divided in multi-levelled groups of three, in a cooperative learning environment
Firstly they had to search information on their own about different given sub-topics (such as the human skeleton, the cardio-vascular system etc.).
At school they provided to classify info, draw explanatory pictures and write a given number of questions and answers on posters.
All along the teacher helped with language accuracy/fluency and observed the processes of cooperating, finding solutions, problem solving skills and peer interactions.
When all the posters were ready the students autonomously prepared themselves to present their works to their classmates, reading and answering questions both in English and Italian.
In the end they were judged both by the children and the teacher.
In the attached file you may find only the final product, assembled as an extra large My Body Book.
This has been surely a good way to find out each child's competence level regarding social and citizenship skills. Furthermore, it's been useful for the students to enrich themselves, improving at the same time both their English and Science knowledge.
